Not Much Swingin'

I spent the weekend in Santa Fe, where I saw dozens upon dozens of Kerry-Edwards bumper stickers, signs, tattoos, skywriting, blimps, etc., but only one lonely Bush-Cheney bumper sticker. I know New Mexico's a swing state, but where are the swingers?

This is just an educated guess, but Santa Fe, being the state capital, has a lot of government employees with a vested interest in big government, to say nothing of all the California transplants. I suspect you'd probably find more Kerry-Edwards bumper stickers in Austin too, for some of the same reasons, as well as the presence of a big liberal university.

So where are the New Mexico "swingers"? How about Alamogordo, Albuquerque (Kirtland AFB), Carlsbad, Carrizozo, Clovis (Cannon AFB), Deming, Eagle Nest, Farmington, Ft. Sumner, Grants, Hobbs (where the president held a big rally recently), Las Vegas, Los Alamos, Mosquero, Newcomb, Portales, Red River, Roswell, Ruidoso, San Jon, Shiprock, Taos (well, probably not too many), Truth or Consequences, Ute Park, Vaughn, Wagon Mound, White Rock, Yeso, and last but not least,Zuni.

In 2002, New Mexico had an estimated population of 1,855,059; Santa Fe's population was estimated at 65,127. That's about 3.5% of the state's population. Dream on, Spacedark!

  2. I was in Taos recently and noticed the same thing, Kerry signs everywhere. Southern New Mexico is heavy on agriculture and is quite conservative, much like the Texas Panhandle.
