this land is your land

as Bruce Springsteen sang, or was it Peter, Paul, and Mary? It was Bob Dylan! . . . or was it Mojo Nixon? Tex Ritter, Trini Lopez, Lee Greenwood? The song was written by Woody Guthrie, and parodied by Jib-Jab during the 2004 election.

God Bless America! . . . as Ray Charles sang, or it might've been Celine Dion. Or the Mormon Tabarnacle Choir. That song was written by Irving Berlin, and Woody Guthrie hated it, and he hated hearing Kate Smith sing it over and over and over. That's why he wrote "This Land is Your Land," a song he considered more realistic. He changed the lyrics from year to year to reflect current events. What lyrics would the song contain today if Guthrie were still around?

America is diversity. It just is.

And I'm off for the Midwest for awhile. See y'all on the flip side.
